Turning 40: A Reminder to Not Take Life So Seriously

Dale Price

I’m turning 40 today. That’s right, only ten more years and I’m eligible for AARP! Rather than stew over lost time or my graying hair, I choose to share the story of Dale Price. Many of you may already be familiar with Dale’s story. For 170 consecutive mornings, Dale would walk to the front of his house in American Fork, Utah and wave to his 15-year-old son as his school bus passed by. Nothing unique, but Dale decided to dress up each morning donning a different costume. He wore everything from a mermaid to a pirate costume. As you’ll find from NPR’s interview with Dale (below), he didn’t do it to embarrass his son, but to remind him that we shouldn’t always take life so seriously. We’re blessed to live life and have an opportunity love one another. This is what I choose to celebrate today. Thanks for the reminder, Dale! Continue Reading…

Vintage Social Media Posters

Many of you commented on the vintage social media image I posted last week. The image is actually one of four from a series of vintage social media posters created by Moma Propaganda, a Brazilian ad agency. These were created for the Maximidia Seminars, and include posters for Facebook, Twitter, Skype, and YouTube. Since these are available for download in high resolution, I am already looking for wall space to hang these posters in my office. Enjoy!

Do You Suffer From Family Tech Supportitis?

Boca Computer Repair

Let me preface this post by saying that I dearly love my family and that I am more than willing to support them unconditionally.

There’s an epidemic afoot that many in the technology field are suffering from, Family Tech Supportitis. If your job pertains in any way to technology, or if you simply own the latest and greatest in technology, you tend to be “the one” who becomes the family tech support. Especially true during holidays, you are met at the door with a laundry list of computer questions and critical fixes. I’m lucky in that my family has upgraded their technology over the years, but many of you are dealing with parents unwilling to upgrade from Internet Explorer 6 … and you are in my prayers. Order WordPress Categories

Order Categories Screenshot

Little did I know that WordPress doesn’t natively allow you to order your categories. For example, if you want to use your categories of posts as primary navigation as I do with this blog, WordPress will order your categories alphabetically. This doesn’t always allow for the best user-experience. I did find a slick little WordPress plugin called “Category Order” and it worked like a charm. You simply drop and drag your categories in any order you wish. You can download the plugin at http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/order-categories/. Enjoy

The world is ‘abuzz’ with vuvuzelas

I have to admit that I’ve never been much of a soccer fan. I have nothing bad to say about the sport, I simply wasn’t exposed to soccer growing up, so I’ve never taken the time to pay attention.

Well, it seems everyone suddenly has World Cup fever, or at least for the next month. I decided this past Saturday to jump on the bandwagon and sit down to watch my first soccer match. Or is it a game? Either way, I sat down to watch. After about 30 seconds, I found myself adjusting my television in an attempt to fix the buzzing noise. I even took the extreme step of resetting my DirecTV receiver. It finally dawned on me that the noise wasn’t my TV malfunctioning, but was coming from the soccer crowd.

Vuvuzela has become my new favorite term. The incessant “buzzing” noise that I heard is being created by a long plastic blow horn that South African soccer fans use to cheer on their team. It’s become such a buzz (pun intended) with European and American fans that organizers considered banning the horns; they ultimately have decided to keep them. An annoyance, I do think it comical that ESPN has spent hundreds of millions of dollars to sponsor the World Cup, and will ultimately lose its shirt on the deal because of a plastic blow horn. Soccer greenhorns like myself will turn tail and run at the first sound of buzzing.

Exposing ourselves to something new is often hard. Be it soccer, meeting new friends or being willing to look at the world in a new light — change is difficult. So unfortunately for many, the vuvuzelas may prevent many potential new soccer fans from learning the game for the first time. Those new to the sport may not watch, or be unwilling to give it a chance. It got me thinking, how many other vuvuzelas, or road blocks, do we experience on a daily basis that prevent us from trying something new?
